Monsoon Watch: Storm brought rain and damaging winds to the Valley

The Valley saw another round of Monsoon weather Tuesday, which brought down trees and left some in the dark.

Video taken by SkyFOX shows rain moving into the Valley from the east, with a rain cell hitting the Apache Junction area at around 4:00 p.m. ADOT camera in the area of Loop 202 and McKellips in Scottsdale show significantly reduced visibility for some time as a result of rain.

The storm also brought down trees in parts of Mesa. Video taken by Sky FOX shows a big tree in a residential neighborhood and a row of trees at a cemetery that fell as a result of the storm.

Officials with SRP say storm activities and downed power lines mean over 3,000 customers are without power, as of around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. Customers in parts of Scottsdale, Mesa, Apache Junction and northeast of Youngberg are affected. Some customers were still without power as of 9:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Meanwhile, APS officials say as of 6:30 p.m., around 2,100 customers are without power in Tempe, in an area stretching from 1st Street to Broadway, and from Shafer Driver to College Avenue. Power was restored in the area as of 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, officials with the National Weather Service in Phoenix say the day was setting up to be one of the most active days in terms of weather this summer, with forecasters calling for a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday night, with patchy blowing dust before 11:00 p.m. In addition, a flash flood watch is in effect until 1:00 a.m. Wednesday for various Valley cities, including Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Mesa, and Queen Creek.

Some were glad the storm brought some cooling for parts of the city.

"I love it," said one person. "It cools it down and it allows people to do things inside."

Others, however, were not as keen with the storm.

"It's been, like, 110 with humidity," said another person. "Nope. Keep the sunshine coming."
