Suspect shot, killed by DPS following pursuit
PHOENIX - A man was shot and killed by a Department of Public Safety trooper after authorities say he led them on a pursuit on valley freeways.
According to DPS, it all started when a trooper tried to pull over the vehicle for a traffic violation on Loop 101 near Elliot Road around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. That driver did not stop and ended up leading the trooper on a pursuit that moved through U.S. 60 and eventually back on Loop 101.
Another trooper attempted to deploy stop sticks on Loop 101 near 64th Street. That's when the suspect tried to run over the trooper, who was able to get out of the way, but did injure his ankle.
The driver ended up smashing into several patrol vehicles and that's when DPS troopers realized the man was armed.
"One of those troopers felt endangered for his life and for the troopers around him and fired more than one shot at the suspect. The troopers rendered aid almost immediately," said a DPS official. "At about 11:30 p.m., that subject was pronounced dead at the scene."
The suspect's name has not been released.
