Jugging: Chandler PD raising awareness of crime targeting shoppers

Police departments in the Phoenix area, as well as other departments around the U.S., say they are seeing a rise in a crime called "jugging," and they are warning shoppers to be extra aware of their surroundings this holiday season.

"There's been an uptick nationwide, but for Chandler, not so much an uptick. This is more of a proactive 'let's get the word out to the community,'" said Sgt. Ricky Gonzales with the Chandler Police Department.

Here's what to know.

What is "jugging"?

"Jugging" happens when a person is out shopping: they get in their car and drive off while someone follows them. When the person gets to their next destination, someone will then break into their car.

"Typically when we would see these things in the past, it was more of a scenario where they'd be some form of a robbery, either a confrontation someone's caused, whether they're armed or not," said Sgt. Gonzales.

In cases of Jugging, one might never see the suspect.

"A lot of times, these folks are following people home and waiting until you get inside or your next destination, forcing entry into your vehicle and taking those items," said Sgt. Gonzales.

Police sharing safety tips

Chandler Police officials are sharing prevention tips, as shoppers head to the stores ahead of Christmas.

"If you cannot avoid it, especially during the shopping season, try not to leave high-dollar items, cash or firearms inside your vehicle, and be aware of where you're at and who is around you," said Sgt. Gonzales.

Chandler Police also say if you notice someone following you after going shopping, or even after going to the bank, it's best to call 911.
