Pedestrian fatally hit by train in Phoenix

A Phoenix roadway reopened Wednesday morning after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train, police said.

The collision happened just after 1:30 a.m. on July 19 at the intersection of 35th and Grand Avenues

When police arrived, they say they found a man "with obvious signs of injury" lying on the railroad tracks. The man, identified as 59-year-old Richard Sierzega, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe Sierzega was laying down on the tracks just before the collision.

"The conductor was unable to stop the train in time to avoid the collision," Sgt. Phil Krynsky said.

The area was shut down for several hours during the investigation.

No other information was released.
