Grandmother shot, killed granddaughter in Buckeye: police
BUCKEYE, Ariz. - A woman who allegedly shot and killed her granddaughter on Sunday afternoon in Buckeye has been taken into custody.
The shooting happened just after 4 p.m. at a home near Baseline and Miller Roads. Per court documents, the incident began when 71-year-old Debra Elisa Green-Davis heard her daughter and granddaughter fighting in the living room.
Davis then dialed 911 for help, and investigators say that was when the granddaughter, identified as 31-year-old Larkeya Lashawn Elliott, punched Davis in an attempt to take the phone away. Elliot's moth then grabbed her by the hair, and the two continued to tussle some more.
Officers said Davis then took out a handgun and shot Elliot in the back. Elliott died before she was transported to a hospital.
"We don't like to see this happen, we hate to see this happen, but our officers are out there, they're highly trained, and they're going to do whatever they can to save lives when something like this does occur," said Carissa Planalp with Buckeye Police.
The victim, according to officials with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry, worked as a correction officer from Oct. 14, 2019 to Aug. 14, 2020. During her time with ADCRR, she was assigned to Lewis State Prison.
What they are saying
Once in custody, police said Greene-Davis admitted to shooting her granddaughter and said she did not believe her granddaughter was going to kill her mother during the fight.
Some living in the area appear to be in disbelief over what had happened.
"A 70-year-old grandmother shooting and killing her granddaughter? I mean that doesn’t happen in this neighborhood. Come on," said one man.
Greene-Davis went through a full medical evaluation and did not have any serious injuries.
Her bond was set at $500,000 and she is facing 2nd degree murder charges.
