PHOENIX - A man who allegedly opened fire at officers in Phoenix was shot by police and has been booked into jail.
The shooting happened at 6:47 a.m. on Feb. 13 near 19th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.
Police say officers responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call about a man holding a woman against her will at gunpoint.
"When officers got to the area, they surrounded the apartment and began to call out individuals from inside the apartment. While officers were giving commands, a man inside the apartment fired a handgun at officers from the backyard window," police said.
Officers returned fire.
"The man was then seen leaving the apartment and jumping over a block wall into the alley. Officers gave commands as the man ran down the alley. It was at this time a different officer fired his duty weapon stopping the man’s actions," Sgt. Bower said.
The suspect, 35-year-old Edward Brown, was struck. He was booked into jail after being released from the hospital.
No officers were hurt.

"These are difficult situations that nobody anticipates, nobody expects and nobody wants to be involved in, whether it’s the community, the officer. So, what happens when you’re engaged with something like that? You have to reassess the situation to find out what’s the next step, what the officer is going to be able to provide to make sure the safety of the community is first and foremost," Sgt. Bower said.
Between all the commotion, neighbors woke up to the sounds.
"He woke up. He was the one who told me as soon as he walked out of the apartment he heard gunshots," Nancy Martinez said.
The original 911 caller is now with police as detectives work to uncover what led up to the scene. They were seen going door to door asking for any witnesses.
"There were a lot of rounds being fired. Detectives are in the middle of that investigation trying to determine and identify what was struck and how many shots were fired by officers as well as the man," Sgt. Bower said.
Police are asking anyone with information, including surveillance video, to contact them at 480-262-6151.
"It’s scary, especially when you have a little baby, and you’re just trying to get to work. It’s unfortunate, but it’s kind of just how it is in this area," Martinez said.
The department plans to release the body cam video in 14 days, according to policy.
