2 accused of murder after man found dead inside car near Arizona-Mexico border

Two people are accused of murder after a man's body was found inside a vehicle in a canal in southwestern Arizona.

The Yuma County Sheriff's Office says 29-year-old Eric Cruz was found dead just before 7 a.m. on June 6 near Avenue G and County 21st Street in San Luis.

"During the initial investigation, it was determined the deceased to be a victim of a homicide," the sheriff's office said.

On June 10, Brittney Garcia, a 30-year-old Somerton woman, was arrested in connection to Cruz's death. She was booked into jail and is accused of first-degree murder.

Just over a week later, the sheriff's office said a second suspect, 34-year-old Fernando Malta, also of Somerton, had been arrested. Malta was booked into jail and is accused of multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted arson, evidence tampering, abandonment/concealment of a dead body and possession of a weapon by a prohibited person.
