A gun was allegedly found in a student's backpack on Thursday at Kyrene Altadeña Middle School in Phoenix. The gun wasn't loaded, the school said in a letter to parents.
Accused killer Luigi Mangione fights extradition
The man accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan is fighting extradition to New York. Since arresting him on Monday, authorities have been building their case against Luigi Mangione. Man gets stuck in chimney while running from police
Investigators in Fall River, Massachusetts say detectives were serving a search warrant when two men got onto a roof to flee from police. One man jumped into a parked car and escaped, but the other man got stuck while going down a chimney. The man was eventually freed and arrested.

Biden commutes 1,500 sentences, pardons 39 people
President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of 1,500 people who were released from prison and placed on home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic and is pardoning 39 individuals convicted of nonviolent crimes. Biden’s actions mark the biggest single-day act of clemency in modern history.

Maricopa Co. agrees to $6M payout in 2020 protest case
Maricopa County agreed to a $6 million payout in a lawsuit brought by protesters wrongly charged as gang members in 2020. The board of supervisors unanimously approved the agreement on Dec. 11. The DOJ found the protesters rights were violated during their investigation into the Phoenix Police Department. All charges were eventually dismissed.
