In this episode of John Hook's Newsmaker Saturday, we begin with the story of a Phoenix man who checked out of his life and decided to live on the streets of America, traveling town-to-town and documenting others who are struggling along the way. This is Jason Smith's story. In the second segment, we're talking with our own Christina Carilla as she embarks on a trip of a lifetime with American veterans from various hard-fought battles. They're visiting our nation's capitol while on an Honor Flight trip to see how they're honored, as well as those who've passed on are being remembered.

Arizona veterans arrive in D.C. for Honor Flight

Veterans from the Valley arrived in Washington D.C. on Wednesday. They're in our nation's capitol ahead of Memorial Day Weekend as part of an Honor Flight. These war heroes departed from Phoenix Sky Harbor surrounded by cheering crowds. Their trip to D.C. is a chance to honor the lives lost in battles and to see the memorials that represent what they fought for. These are veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Some of them fought in all three.

10K flags planted for Memorial Day in Phoenix

On the morning of May 23, just days ahead of Memorial Day, 90 volunteers in the Phoenix area took part in the planting of 10,000 U.S. flags at the University of Phoenix. The flag display, when seen at a proper angle, spells out 'celebrate, honor, remember.' FOX 10's Danielle Miller reports.
