Fans in Lubbock overturn car, set scooters on fire after TTU Final Four win
Police are working to identify those responsible for vandalism and property damage that happened in Lubbock after Texas Tech's win against Michigan St. in the Final Four Saturday night.
The damage happened as thousands of students and Red Raider fans were out celebrating Tech heading to the NCAA men's basketball national championship game.
Officers were quickly able to contain the crowd to a one block area, but some of the celebrations went too far, with police having to use tear gas to get the crowd to disperse.
According to police, at least one car was flipped over on Broadway, and a couch and some scooters were set on fire.
The celebrations began at about 10 p.m., and police were able to clear the scene and reopen Broadway at 1:45 a.m.
There were numerous people being uncooperative with police, and officers were even taunted and hit with bottles, police said.
Officers "showed great restraint" while get the crowd under control and getting them to disperse.
Police are continuing their investigation into these crimes, and will be collecting photos and videos as they work to identify the people who caused this damage.
Texas Tech University released the followint statement regarding the celebrations Saturday night:
"This is a historical achievement in the university's history and a great source of pride for all Red Raiders. As we continue to celebrate, we must do so in a way that does not diminish this incredible moment. Texas Tech has the best fans in the country and we appreciate their enthusiastic support and ask that they celebrate with integrity, positive energy and respect."
Also Saturday night, firefighters responded to 10 small furniture fires and 23 people were arrested near Michigan State's East Lansing campus. Two signs and a police vehicle were damaged before the crowd, which grew to about 1,500 people, was dispersed.
