PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- For one Deer Valley football team, it may be the first time they go national. The Deer Valley Sparks will play the regionals this weekend, and if they win, they'll head to Florida to play in the Pop Warner Super Bowl. The team is hoping to raise enough money to cover their accommodations.
"We've been waiting a while for this opportunity," said player Judah Huisman. It's been a year of hard work and dedication for the team, and for the first time ever, this team of 12 to 14-year-olds may get the chance to head to the nationals. The Sparks are Division 2 State champs, and have made it through the semifinal regionals. Now, they are practicing for the regionals, scheduled to be held in Los Angeles, and and if they win that, they will be heading to Florida.
"It's a goal we've been trying to reach for a while, and it'll just mean a lot because we've been together so long," said Huisman.
Every player has been asked to raise $1,400, in order to cover airfare and other accommodations.
"There's heavy expenses, one being the travel to get there, the room and board that the boys will do, the field costs, anything affiliated with it," said coach Tom Larson.
For Huisman, it would be a dream come true.
"We haven't really got this far, and so it's pretty intense, because it's our last year, and there is a lot on the line and to play on the national stage would be so fun," said Huisman.
