Texas beats ASU in double-overtime in College Football Playoff Quarterfinal

College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

The Arizona State Sun Devils dug out of a 17-3 halftime hole against the heavily-favored Texas Longhorns to force two overtimes in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup at the Peach Bowl.

Arizona State star running back Cam Skattebo finished with 143 rushing yards and two touchdowns and added a passing touchdown on a 42-yard toss to Malik McClain.

Skattebo, who finished 5th in the Heisman Trophy voting, was named the Offensive MVP of the game, despite being on the losing end.

Quarterback Sam Leavitt finished with 222 yards passing and 60 yards rushing.

The Sun Devils were within one play of winning the game before Texas converted a 4th and 13 in the first overtime with a touchdown pass from Quinn Ewers to Matthew Golden.

Ewers connected on a touchdown pass to Gunnar Helm in the second overtime to secure the win for Texas.

Some pundits are calling the double-overtime thriller the greatest game in the history of the College Football Playoff and certainly the most competitive this season, the first season the playoff expanded to a 12-team format.

How they got here

After being picked to finish last in the Big 12, Arizona State shocked the college football world by winning the conference in their first year.

ASU defeated Iowa State, 45-19, in the Big 12 Championship game, earning a first-round bye in the 12-team College Football Playoff.

Texas defeated Clemson, 38-24, in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
