Woman asked 911 for help as she was chased on SR 51 freeway
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The 9-1-1 transcripts released in a shooting death that has baffled police and alarmed many in the valley -- we're talking about the freeway shooting of 49-year-old Dinya Farmer.
She's the Phoenix woman who was shot in the head as she drove on the State Route 51 freeway nearly two weeks ago.
Phoenix Police are not releasing audio of the 9-1-1 call probably out of respect for Farmer's friends and loved ones. But you don't need to hear her voice to imagine the panic and fear she must have felt as she drove on SR51 while being chased by a white pick up truck.
On the night of September 7th, Farmer drover her black Honda Accord heading north on SR51. At Seventh Avenue, she called 9-1-1 at 7:20 p.m. to report being chased.
Farmer told the 9-1-1 operator, "These Mexican guys from.. they started at Broadway and Seventh Avenue following me and as I turned off to just get off the freeway, they pulled up and was gonna get outta their truck and like, they're following me now on the freeway."
In the next few moments as Farmer drove north on SR51, she described the truck pursuing her as a white pick up work truck, asking the operator what she should do and said she was nervous.
As Farmer approached Thomas Road, describing where she was and who was pursuing her, she said, "Okay, yeah, they're right next to me."
There is an unknown noise heard on the phone and Farmer is not heard on the call again, though the operator tried several times to get a response.
Those noises are now believed to be gunshots fired into Farmer's car -- one struck Farmer in the head. Her car crashed into the freeway median at Thomas Road. She died later at an area hospital.
Despite an intense investigation that closed the freeway for hours, the people who shot and killed Farmer are still on the run.
