What determines a Scare Score?

To determine a ZIP code’s Scare Score, Instacart takes the following into consideration:

  • Total ounces and ounces per person of candy sold in October 2023
  • Total Halloween costume items and costume items per person sold
  • Total Halloween décor items and décor items per person sold

2 Utah ZIP codes topped the list

Taking the top two spots on Instacart’s list were Draper (84020) and Lehi (84043), Utah.

In a separate study conducted by CouponBirds, Utah was also ranked third in the country as one of the states that gave out the most candy on Halloween.

Draper’s best-selling candies were peanut M&M’s, M&M’s and Twix bars. And the same went for Lehi, except Reese’s peanut butter cups were one of the more popular candies instead of Twix.

Six California ZIP codes made the top 30, with Texas and New York ZIP codes appearing multiple times.
