Toddler pulled from backyard swimming pool dies

A 2-year-old girl was pulled from a backyard swimming pool and rushed to an area hospital Friday night near Glendale and 67th Avenues. She was later pronounced dead.

This comes as we head into a very hot weekend where so many people across the valley will be depending on their pools to keep cool.

Firefighters say unfortunately, the drowning serves as another reminder of how quickly something like this can happen.

SkyFOX was over the scene when the call came in around 6:00 p.m. According to the Glendale Fire Department, a family member found the child floating face down in the pool and called 9-1-1. That family member started CPR immediately. Police and paramedics took over as soon as they arrived at the home.

The family told crews that they believe the girl may have been in the water for possibly just five minutes. Firefighters tell us the toddler wasn't breathing when she got to Banner Thunderbird Hospital, but they did everything they could to save her.

"When we got on scene.. our focus was on the child and then we scooped her and ran out. We are going to fight from the minute we get there until the minute we turn over care. Just never never take your eyes off your children.. off any children. If there's groups at your house, just have somebody designated to watch the kids around the pool. It's so important," said GFD's Amber Jones.

Firefighters tell us as the weather heats up, it is never too late to remind people to keep a close eye on kids around pools.

Authorities say there was a group of people at the home when the 2-year-old slipped into the water. In the SkyFOX video, there were no barriers around the pool that we could see from the helicopter.
