TEMPE, Ariz. (FOX 10) - Tempe officials are investigating an aggravated assault that left a woman recovering after being stabbed.
Tempe Police say a woman in her 50's was stabbed multiple times by her brother, identified as 59-year-old Ernest Tarrago, during an altercation inside a home on East Carter near Mill Avenue around 10 a.m. Sunday morning.
"I've known this family for like 20 years now.. neighbors, they come over for Christmas, Thanksgiving," said Sandro Porres, who knows the victim and suspect.
Porres lives across the street and says the victim is mentally unstable.
"She has emotional problems and unfortunately, they seemed to have gotten into an argument where brother ended up stabbing her."
Porres says this is not the first time police officers have responded to this home because of disturbances.
"There's always cops coming, like three or four times a year.. she's kind of out of control."
Tarrago cooperated with police before being arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
Porres says the suspect and his sister have lived here with their mother ever since he can remember.
"But I know it's really heartbreaking for the mom.. son in jail.. daughter in the hospital."
Police had initially reported the victim was in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, but she is now expected to recover.
