PEORIA, Ariz. - Peoria Police say officers arrested an 18-year-old male student at Liberty High School for bringing a gun onto school grounds in his vehicle. This happened at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday before classes began.
"Police received an anonymous tip, investigated the incident, and located a gun in the male's vehicle at the school," stated Officer Brandon Sheffert.
According to police, the student, identified as Michael Helt, stated bringing the gun to school was an accident.
"The Peoria Unified School District was notified of the incident and arrest and was ensured that there was no danger to the Liberty campus. These matters are extremely serious in nature, cause disruption of an educational institution, and are not tolerated by the Peoria Unified School District or the Peoria Police Department," added Sheffert.
Liberty High School is located near 91st Avenue and Deer Valley Road.
"It was, like, a mistake, but still pretty scary," said Gary Winthrope.
Meanwhile, Helt's friends came to his defense Wednesday.
"We all know Mike," said one of Helt's friends. "He's a fisher. He's a hunter. He's a really nice guy, actually."
Helt is booked at the 4th Avenue Jail, on a charge of carrying a weapon on school grounds.
