SPD says Det. Ryan So died in a 'line of duty death'

A Scottsdale police officer has died following what police are calling a "critical incident," although many of the details about what occurred are still not known.

In a brief news conference on June 13, SPD identified the officer as Detective Ryan So.

A procession was held Thursday night as So's body was released from the hospital and transported to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police say Detective So served with the department for more than nine years. He also served in the U.S. Navy.

So is survived by his wife and three children.

Here's what we know about the incident: it all started around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Police say there was a call for an officer needing emergency assistance between 78th and 76th streets near the Greenway-Hayden Loop. That's where So was found. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died.

"As you can imagine, this is an incredibly difficult time. We ask for privacy for Ryan’s family and for the police department. Please keep Ryan’s family and the men and women of the Scottsdale Police Department in your thoughts and prayers," said Asst. Chief Rich Slavin.

SPD says there is no threat to the community.

FOX 10 has also learned that the Mesa Police Department is conducting the investigation into what happened as part of the East Valley Critical Response Team.
