Police: Man arrested in fatal wreck apparently high on drugs
PHOENIX (AP) - A 40-year-old Phoenix man accused of reckless manslaughter in a collision that killed another driver apparently was high on drugs.
Paul Denver Kephart appeared in court Tuesday night after being arrested at a hospital where he was treated for injuries from the Jan. 8 collision.
A police document said Kephart's pickup ran a red light and collided with a car driven by John Debaun Jr., who was fatally injured.
The document said a detective observed that Kephart had slurred speech and other signs of impairment. It also said Kephart told the detective that he had taken pain pills and that Kephart was "a known opiate user to the Fire Department."
Kephart was jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond. He didn't have an attorney when he appeared in court.
