PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The Phoenix Zoo is celebrating the second giraffe born in the past year.
The latest addition was born on June 26, and at only a week old, she's already about six feet tall and weighs more than 150 pounds.
"They're that tall because they have to be able to reach their mom to nurse from her because she's so high up," said zookeeper Alicia Marcell. "They have to get up and moving pretty quickly because if they were in the wild, they would have predators and things that could be a threat, and if they're laying down, that makes them more at risk for those things. They usually get up within the first hour and nursing on their own at that time too."
This baby girl masai giraffe's mother is seven-year-old Imara, and her father is nine-year-old Miguu.
"She's doing great. Mom is being great with her. This is Imara's first time raising a calf, so we're really excited to see what a good mom she is. The baby is definitely spunky, already has that strong personality like her mother," said Marcell.
Zookeepers aren't the only ones excited for the baby girl. Zoogoers can't wait to see her with the rest of the group. The newborn does not have a name just yet, but the Phoenix Zoo is going to be releasing more information next week about how you can help give her a name.
