Phoenix teen killed after stray bullet pierces through 2nd story bedroom
Police are investigating a fatal shooting involving a 15-year-old girl who was sitting inside her second-story bedroom near 48th Street and Broadway Road.
PHOENIX - When officers responded to a call about a shooting in the area of 48th Street and Broadway Road on June 25, they found a 15-year-old girl with a gunshot wound at about 8:15 p.m.
"She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, and later pronounced deceased," stated Sgt. Andy Williams of the Phoenix Police Department.
The victim was sitting inside her home during the shooting, and Williams says the bullet came from the outside and into her second-story bedroom.
She's identified as Graciela Molina.
There is no suspect information at this time.
The community this happened in is in shock. Alquondra Peoples, a neighbor, says, "We heard shots from inside, came out, the whole neighborhood just surrounded by cops. I was just scared."
She adds, "Home is supposed to be your safe place. We tell our kids to get in the bed, so for that not to be true …"
Two other family members were in the room when Molina was struck.
"They watched this happen to their family member which I can only imagine is incredibly traumatic and horrible to have to go through that," Williams said.
Police received several calls for gunshots in that area around the same Friday night. They believe the bullet that killed Molina was a stray round from that shooting nearby.
As for Peoples, she says she is keeping the family in her thoughts.
"I’m sorry for the family and I hope they stay together as a unit. Just, wow," she said.
Police are asking for the community's help to find who's responsible and for those who live in this area to review any kind of surveillance footage so investigators can try to piece together what happened.
