Phoenix Police: Suspect in custody following officer-involved shooting
PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- Police have arrested a man after an officer-involved shooting shut down a Valley freeway for several hours on Sunday night.
According to Phoenix police, two officers were patrolling the area near 27th and Grand Avenues when they noticed a man sitting on a hill. When the approached him, they learned he had a warrant out for his arrest and when they tried to arrest him, the suspect fought with the officers.
The officers tried to subdue the suspect with a taser and that's when they noticed he hand a handgun in his waistband.
When the suspect tried to reach for the gun, the officers opened fire on him, but he was able to get away.
Police set up a perimeter and shut down Interstate 17 for several hours on Sunday night, however, they were unable to find the suspect.
On Monday, the 29-year-old suspect was located and taken into custody near 27th Avenue and Virginia.
Police say the suspect was not injured during the shooting. His identity has not been released.
