Phoenix has blueprint to be "heat ready"

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - It is obvious why extreme weather in other parts of the country gets so much more attention than extreme weather in the valley, such as the extreme temperatures on Tuesday. However, extreme heat has proven to be just as deadly to people not ready for it, with 155 heat associated deaths in maricopa county last year alone.

"We are developing a blueprint to be heat ready and proactive, so our residents and businesses know what to do to take heat effectively," said Karen Peters with the City of Phoenix. The city wants to change the way we view these extreme heat warning days.

"Because urban heat is a challenge, it affects our vulnerable residents particularly,
said Peters. " But it affects our economic viability in the long run."

Phoenix launched it's "Heat Ready City" campaign, which includes creating more shade, and educating people about being heat smart. Nicole James, who lives in the city, says she takes the heat very seriously, and is prepared for the extreme heat.

Water is key.

"I stay completely hydrated," said James. "I've gone from at least a gallon a day to at least two. I wear breathable clothing if I can."

The city finds out in October if it wins a monetary award from Bloomberg Philanthropies to add to it's Heat Ready City plan.
