Arrest made 7 months after a Maryvale party leaves 1 dead, 5 injured

An arrest was made almost 7 months after a house party ended in a person being shot and killed, and several others being injured in Maryvale.

Phoenix Police say officers responded to the scene on May 29 at around 3:30 a.m. near 59th Avenue and Thomas after witnesses reported hearing gunshots. Once at the scene, officers found 18-year-old Luis Torres who had been shot. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Five other people, ranging in ages from 16 to 18, were also shot but survived.

"Detectives on scene learned that the incident began when uninvited guests arrived at a party and were asked to leave," Sgt. Vincent Cole said in a statement. "Shortly thereafter, shots were fired and several individuals were struck."

A surveillance camera in the neighborhood captured the back and forth of gunfire, as panicked teens ran through the street.

On Dec. 19, Phoenix Police announced the arrest of Jacob Salinas, 18. He's accused of several felonies, including murder.

The shooting left neighbors shocked and cautious, with one person saying she does not go outside of her home now, unless she has to.

"Everyone was just kind of running around, and we just heard two rounds of gunshots. That was it," said a person living in the area, who did not want to be identified. "All you hear in the video is they’re kinda having a conflict going on, walking back and forth, and it looks like it started here in the corner."
