Man killed in Mesa Police shooting; no officers hurt

A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Mesa.

According to police, the incident began just before 5 p.m. on Sept. 29 when someone called 911 saying that their father was suicidal and was inside a running car with a hose attached to the tailpipe.

When officers arrived at the scene near Stapley Drive and Southern Avenue, the suspect allegedly got out of the car, pulled out a knife and walked toward the officers. He ignored their commands to drop the knife and that's when he was shot, police said.

"When this man was shot, Mesa Fire did roll in and start their live-saving measures," Det. Brandi George said. "They tried to save his life, for an extended period of time, but ultimately, he was pronounced deceased on the scene."

The 46-year-old suspect was identified as Thomas McGinty. No officers were injured.
