Investigation into deadly shooting along I-17 continues

The shooting, according to police, happened on or near the northbound lanes of I-17. The victim in the case has been identified. FOX 10's Nicole Garcia reports.

The northbound Interstate 17 off-ramp at Thunderbird Road was closed for some time on June 1 due to a death investigation in north Phoenix.

The person who died was identified by police as 18-year-old Jayden Carnow-Garcia. Police officials said he was killed in a shooting that happened before the crash.

Officials said at around 4:00 a.m., they received several calls about a car that crashed in the area. The car ended up at the bottom of a water retention basin.

"There are round strikes on the vehicle. We believe the shooting occurred on or around the I-17 northbound," said Sgt. Vince Cole with Phoenix Police.

Carnow-Garcia was declared dead at the scene. According to court records, Carnow-Garcia was recently arrested by Federal agents and was accused of committing criminal offenses related to human smuggling. He had entered into a plea deal and was awaiting his sentencing hearing when he was killed.

The exit ramp at northbound I-17 at Thunderbird was closed due to the investigation for hours. Police are still looking for suspects and a motive.
