Man arrested in connection to hit-and-run that seriously injured 12-year-old boy
GLENDALE, Ariz. (FOX 10) - Glendale police have arrested a man in connection to a hit-and-run that left a 12-year-old boy seriously injured.
According to the Glendale Police Department, 44-year-old Jesse Mendoza turned himself into police Wednesday.
On May 6, the boy, since identified as Adrian Coronel, was riding his skateboard near 63rd Avenue and Camelback Road when he was hit by a box truck. After the collision, the box truck did not stop and left the area.
Police say Mendoza turned himself in after police circulated photos of the box truck to the media. The box truck was located in Phoenix and Mendoza was booked into jail on multiple charges, including failure to stop for an accident involving serious injury, failure to render reasonable assistance to an injured pedestrian, driving on a suspended license and tampering with physical evidence.
According to court records, Mendoza has been convicted of aggravated DUI in the past, and he has also been cited several times for driving without a license and/or insurance.
At this time, Adrian remains in serious condition, with a broken rib and skull fractures.
"He's not back to normal, and I'm just afraid that, you know, he's not going to be Adrian, and it's just sad," said Adrian's mother, Natalie Acevedo. "You know, he's not going to be himself, the old Adrian that loves Wimpy Kids books and basketball, but with God's will, everything is going to work out."
Mendoza's bond has been set at $100,000.
