I-10 reopens near Tonopah following deadly semi-truck crash
TONOPAH, Ariz. (KSAZ) - A three-vehicle pile-up turned fatal at around 5 a.m. this morning when a semi-truck accidentally rolled over on its side, taking up the right lane on eastbound Interstate 10.
Then, a second truck was at a complete stop when a third semi-truck slammed into the back of the second, pushing it into the first truck where the third drive was found dead at the scene.
After crews treated the first two drivers who had minor injuries, they called in the ADOT hazmat team to clean up the scene since the second truck spilled its cargo onto the highway.
"This is actually a hazardous waste, which is more of an environmentally hazardous substance and what the material is is a hydroxide type of clay material that's used in some other production, and after it's used, it has to go to a recycling plant," Travis Qualls said.
It wasn't until that hazardous material was completely removed from both lanes that DPS could reopen I-10 eastbound.
