A confrontation had occurred inside the busy restaurant and continued into the parking lot outside.
Police in Glendale are trying to identify a suspect in an aggravated assault that has hospitalized a man who just returned from deployment in Afghanistan.
"Out son Adam suffered a major brain bleed," said the victim's mother, Lisa McClure. "Adam's head hit the ground, knocking him unconscious. The suspect jumped on top of my unconscious son and continued to punch him."
The two women who were with Adam pulled the suspect off, and the suspect ran away as the women gave Adam CPR and called for help.
Adam, who recently returned from a second tour in Afghanistan, immediately underwent emergency brain surgery.
"As parents, we were always concerned about Adam's safety during his two tours in Afghanistan, but it's inconceivable for us to imagine he would be a victim of such a heinous, unprovoked crime here at home," said McClure.
Adam volunteered to deploy on a border mission, and was in the process of applying to join the U.S. Border Patrol. The interview was originally scheduled to take place two days after the brutal attack.
It is unknown if Adam will fully recover from his injuries.
Police have released surveillance photos of the suspect in hope that someone can identify him. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male between the ages of 25 and 30, with tattoos on his forearm. There were two women and another man with him.
Glendale police say these people were with the suspect at the time of the assault.
"Please. Please come forward so our son can recover in peace," McClure said.
