Suspect dead following shooting involving Glendale Police officers

A Glendale police officer shot and killed a 21-year-old suspect after a car accident on Thursday, authorities said.

According to a statement released by police officers, the incident began with an accident involving an SUV and a pickup truck in the area of 53rd Avenue and Maryland.

"One of our Glendale Fire Department trucks was arriving on the scene and witnessed the individual inside the pickup truck, jump out of the truck and run from the scene," read a portion of the statement.

Officials said a Glendale Police officer in the area started searching for the suspect.

The shooting, according to officials, happened near 53rd Avenue and Maryland, and there may be a total of three scenes that are connected to the incident. FOX 10's Stephanie Bennett reports.

"While searching a nearby alleyway, the officer heard gunfire coming from a nearby bush," police said. "The suspect, who was hiding inside the bush, fired several rounds and the officer returned fire."

The suspect, according to police, was identified as 21-year-old Anthony Rios, Jr. He was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

The officer involved in the shooting, identified by officials as an eight-year veteran of the force, was not injured.

Glendale Police said Surprise Police will investigate the officer-involved shooting.
