Firefighter found dead at National Guard barracks remembered at funeral

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A decorated Phoenix firefighter who not only served the Valley, but also our country, has been laid to rest.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning for 46-year-old Juston Doherty, who was training with the Arizona Army National Guard when he was found dead inside his sleeping quarters earlier this month.

Doherty was an Army Ranger and served combat tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He received the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Infantry Badge.

Cpt. Doherty was also a 15-year veteran of the Phoenix Fire Department, and was a tactical rescue technician.

Gov. Doug Ducey has ordered flags to fly at half-staff today in honor of Doherty.

"He is definitely larger than life," said Cpt. Julie Shelley with the Army National Guard. "Great presence, great friend. He was a good leader and instructor. Great soldier."

"He was such an exceptional person in so many ways. Never known a more compassionate person," said Cpt. P.J. Dean with the Phoenix Fire Department. "Took to heart everything our job involves. Helping the public and being a military soldier."
