Massive fire breaks out at north Phoenix apartment complex

Firefighters put out a third-alarm fire that destroyed an apartment near 12th Street and Cinnabar on Thursday night.

Firefighters extinguished a large third-alarm apartment fire near 12th Street and Cinnabar in north Phoenix.

Crews say they were called just after 7 p.m. on Oct. 6 and discovered heavy smoke and fire coming from an apartment complex.

The flames spread to a nearby two-story apartment building, triggering a massive effort to get the fire under control.

One man suffered minor burns, and 80 people were displaced.

"Crisis response units and City of Phoenix transit have arranged for the evacuated residents to be transported to temporary housing.," fire officials said in a statement.

On Oct. 7, people in the area are recounting what happened.

"Our neighbors started banging on the doors, telling everybody to get out," said Tommy Valadez. "We literally all just walked out in our pajamas. I didn't even have time to get my shoes or anything."

"There were random people from the street going and knocking on the door, saying 'hey! There's a fire right behind you guys," said Christian Barrera.

Barrera, who says he manages the apartment complex, has lived in the area for 14 years.

"You know, I grew up with these people here. We saw each other's kids grow up, so we're definitely one to look after the other when they can," said Barrera.

The cause is under investigation.
