Here are the eight key measures that Americans polled say favor Republicans over Democrats.

Party identification and leaning

More Americans identify as Republican or say they lean toward the Republican Party (48%) than identify as or lean Democratic (45%).

Party performance on issues

Republicans are favored over Democrats on key issues heading into the election. Approximately 46% of Americans say the Republican Party can better manage prominent issues in the U.S.

Gallup noted that the top issues people name as the most important are ones that favor Republicans, including the economy (24%), immigration (22%), the government (17%) and inflation (15%).

Economic confidence

Americans have more confidence in the Republican Party when it comes to the economy.

Gallup created an "Economic Confidence Index," which they rate at -28, meaning Americans’ feelings about the economy are negative.

The rating is based on 22% of Americans describing current economic conditions as "excellent" or "good" compared to 48% admitting that they are "poor," and 32% believing the economy is "getting better" versus the 62% saying it is "getting worse."

National satisfaction

Republicans have an advantage over Democrats when it comes to satisfaction in the U.S. Approximately 22% of Americans are satisfied with the way things are going in the country currently.

According to Gallup, satisfaction levels this low have been linked with incumbent presidents losing their reelection bids in past elections.

Presidential job approval

Republicans are favored by voters in the key measure of presidential job approval. This data point is based on respondents in a Gallup poll giving President Joe Biden a 39% job approval rating, below the 48% threshold for past presidents who were reelected, according to Gallup.

Preference for government activity

Americans favor Republicans regarding a preference for a limited government role, a long-held stance of the GOP. Approximately 55% of respondents in the poll say the government is doing too many things that should be managed by individuals and businesses compared to 41% who believe the government should do more to solve the country’s problems.

Party better able to keep America prosperous

Republicans are favored over Democrats when it comes to keeping the U.S. thriving. Gallup noted that 50% believe the GOP is better equipped to do the job compared to 44% who side with Democrats.

Party better able to keep America safe from international threats

Americans also believe the GOP has an advantage over Democrats to keep the nation safe from international threats, with 54% supporting Republicans and 40% favoring Democrats.

Data used to analyze the key measures in 2024 is primarily from a Sept. 3-15 Gallup poll, which is compared with the same key measures in previous presidential election years.
