CAREFREE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - The 4th of July is just two days away, but this year, many cities around Arizona have postponed fireworks display due to dry conditions.
In Carefree, however, the city is giving a preview of what things could look like in the future. Instead of fireworks, the Civana Carefree Resort will feature an aerial lights show by Firefly Drone Shows.
CEO Kevin Kelly describes it as looking like a bunch of comets in the sky.
"We house the firefighters that fight all those big blazes north of us, so we understand the seriousness of the fire ban," said Kelly.
Dubbed the next generation fireworks show, the resort is preparing to offer its first lights show with 30 drones, after the city canceled annual fireworks show because of fire ban.
"To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first in our country, first in the southwest, specifically Arizona, because the technology is relatively new for entertainment and our company," said Kelly.
The National Weather Service in Flagstaff released a report last week, saying that fire danger will increase because of the drought across Northern Arizona. Some residents, however, say they won't let the hot and dry weather get them down.
"I think the drone light show is an excellent idea. I saw it on the Olympics and I thought it was amazing," said Marie Wilkes of Peoria.
Especially for pet owners, since these drones don't make any loud noises.
"A lot better for animals and veterans who have PTSD," said one person.
The lights show is set for July 4 at 8:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. at the resort. People can reserve a dinner at the cafe for a special dinner, and there will also be other food and drinks offered.
This event is free to the public.
