GLENDALE, Ariz. - A driver crashed into a Glendale home as residents were inside on Sunday night.
The crash happened around 7:40 p.m. on Nov. 10 near 67th Avenue and Loop 101, the Glendale Police Department said.
As for the residents inside the home, one of them, a woman, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Speed and impairment were factors in the crash, investigators said.
No names have been released in this case.
'It's just real sad'
"Last night was an absolute wreck," a neighbor said on Monday. "It was just terrible. The car launched all the way through the house."
Witnesses say a blue Dodge Charger was parked just down the road on north 65th Avenue when suddenly it came speeding up to Wahalla Lane, driving with enough speed to send it straight into the living room and as far as the dining room of a family's home.
Pinned underneath was a mother who had been decorating the family's tree for Christmas.
Resident Andy Czarnecki says he provided firefighters with the floor jack needed to raise the car to rush the woman to the hospital.
"It was sad that she was trying to do something for her family. Something joyful, I guess. It's just real sad," Czarnecki said.
The sound of the impact was heard by some residents, and others went outside after sirens filled the air.
"My kids were actually on this bike, coming back from the park nearly minutes before it happened," a neighbor said.
They say a young couple was inside the blue Charger and that almost immediately, the male allegedly tried to run away from the scene and hide, but eventually came back. Both were arrested.
This is not a standalone situation. Neighbors say in the last three years, there have been four crashes around these streets.
Knowing the devastation this latest crash has caused, one family has parents watching their kids closely as they play outside, while others are preparing to ask authorities to start getting proactive.
"That's something that we talked about with neighbors last night, to see what we can do. If we need to go to the HOA, or if we need to go to the city," Czarnecki said. "Not sure what we need to do, but it's something we probably need to look into."
