Dr. Oz explains medical decision behind Christina Applegate having ovaries, Fallopian tubes removed

Christina Applegate revealed in an interview that she recently had her ovaries and Fallopian tube removed as a preventative measure.

"Two weeks ago, I had my ovaries and (Fallopian) tubes removed. My cousin passed away from ovarian cancer in 2008. I could prevent that. That's how I've taken control of everything. It's a relief," Applegate told Today.com.

Applegate had a double mastectomy after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. Since then she has founded the Right Action for Women, which helps women who are at increased risk for breast cancer to cover the high costs associated with screenings.

In the video player above, Dr. Oz explains medically why Applegate would have made the decision to have her ovaries and Fallopian tube removed and offers advice for women who may have the BRCA 1 gene.
