LOS ANGELES - One man's trash really is another man's treasure -- if that trash belonged to Kurt Cobain, that is. California-based auction house Julien's Auctions, which specializes in celebrity memorabilia, just sold an old paper plate that Kurt Cobain ate pizza off of and wrote a set list on for a staggering $22,000.
The plate even appears to have leftover grease stains on it and the auction house said in a press release that the item had an estimated value of $1,000-$2,000.
"Another Nirvana auction stunner included a used paper plate, which Kurt Cobain had eaten pizza on with a handwritten set list in black marker by Cobain used at the 9:30 nightclub in Washington, D.C. in 1990 (estimate: $1,000-$2,000), which sold for an astounding $22,000!"
According to the listing on the auction house's website, Johnny Riggs of the band THUD said his band performed before Nirvana at the 9:30 Club where Cobain purportedly ate pizza off of the plate before writing on it.
"This is a piece of history," said Riggs in a signed statement provided by the auction house. "A handwritten set list by Kurt before the fame hit." Riggs says he grabbed the plate after the show and has kept it ever since.
Another piece of music history that sold over the weekend was a green sweater worn by Cobain from his last photo shoot, according to the auction house. The iconic cardigan sold for $75,000.
