TEMPE, Ariz (KSAZ) - Later this August, Stan Settles will leave his senior living community at the Friendship Village in Tempe to head out to Utah to race at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Last time, this soon-to-be 80-year-old topped driving speeds of over 260 miles per hour.

Despite what some may say, this USC engineering professor has always had a need for speed.

"I got involved in it when I was a kid," Settles said. "I had a dragster when I was in college."

While his kids were growing up, he promised his wife he wouldn't race - now that they've grown up, he's back in the driver's seat.
