PHOENIX - Car racing may have been a factor in a Phoenix freeway crash that left two adults dead and two children critically injured, according to the Arizona Dept. of Public Safety.
The collision, which involved a gray Ford Mustang, happened just before 12:30 a.m. on Feb. 20 near Interstate 10 and 59th Avenue. The vehicle had crashed into a wall at "a high rate of speed," DPS said.
The driver and front-seat passenger, both adults, died in the accident. They were identified by DPS as 30-year-old Jimmy Lee Greenwood of Surprise and 35-year-old Farren Isabel Relerford of El Mirage.
Two kids riding in the backseat of the Mustang, ages 2 and 4, were hospitalized in critical condition, but are expected to survive.
Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said investigators believe the Mustang was racing another car just before the crash occurred, but driver impairment also has not been ruled out.
DPS is asking anyone who saw the accident or other vehicles involved with the Mustang before the crash to contact them at 602-223-2212. If you would like to remains anonymous, tips can be submitted online at https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=1202.
