Second home ownership: Maricopa County tops the list across the nation

It's no surprise that Arizona is a hot spot to visit in the winter, but what may surprise you is the number of people who are buying second homes here, especially in Maricopa County.

The National Association of Home Builders say Maricopa County has over 118,000 homes categorized as "second homes."

The people who buy these second homes are spending an average of $300,000. Many people say they buy second homes here because of the weather and the ability to do outdoor activities year-round, such as golfing.

"Most people are looking for a resort type community.. activities that they can do," said Lori Rust of Home Smart Realty.

Palm Beach, Florida came in second in the study with just over 98,000 "second homes."
