Police release woman's 911 call, made after shooting of alleged home intruder
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. (FOX 10) -- Audio files from a 911 call made by a frightened Valley woman, moments after she shot and killed an intruder who was trying to break into her home, have been released.
Officials with the Maricopa County Sherriff's Office say the suspect was actually the woman's neighbor, who went to the wrong home and was drunk at the time of the incident.
In the 911 call, the woman told the dispatcher that the man shot might have lived in her neighborhood, and said her ex-husband had given her the gun, but she didn't know how to use it.
MCSO officials say the woman called 911 to report a suspicious vehicle in the driveway of her home, located near 127th Avenue and Camelback road. The man who was shot made his way to the woman's front steps.
"I have a gun and I shot," said the woman,
The incident is still under investigation, but officials with the Sherriff's Office say they will hand the case over to the Maricopa County Attorneys Office, and they will make the final decision as to what will happen to the woman, and determine whether she acted in negligence or self defense.
It is important to bear in mind that Arizona is a "Stand Your Ground" state. A criminal defense attorney told FOX 10 the law is that if a person is trying to unlawfully enter your home and you use deadly physical force, it's presumed reasonable. The attorney, however, did say it is risky to shoot through the door, because you might make a mistake.
