AP: Hoffman defeats Riggs in State Superintendent race

PHOENIX (AP/KSAZ) -- The Associated Press is projecting that Democratic candidate Kathy Hoffman to win the race to be the state's next Superintendent of Public Instruction, defeating Republican candidate Frank Riggs.

As of 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Hoffman received 1,091,741 votes (51.30%), while Riggs received 1,037,684 votes (48.70%). This means Hoffman is ahead by 54,057 votes. The Associated Press made the projection at around 6:10 p.m. Monday.

The incumbent Superintendent of Public Instruction, Diane Douglas, was defeated in the GOP primary by Riggs.

Hoffman was one of hundreds of current and former educator-activists on general election ballots across the country following this year's #RedForED protests.
