Arizona weather forecast: Slight chance for rain in Phoenix
PHOENIX - Our first winter storm of 2025 is moving through Arizona. The storm will bring gusty winds, scattered rain/snow showers, and cold temperatures to the state.
Rain and snow
A storm system will run down the west side of the state throughout the day on Tuesday. As the system slips south of Arizona, it will wrap moisture up and over us. As a result, a few spotty, light rain and snow showers may fall over northern and western Arizona during the day on Tuesday.
By Tuesday evening and into the night, a few rain showers are expected to extend down into the Valley and surrounding lower deserts. These showers will be light and spotty, but could provide brief relief from the dry conditions we've experienced recently.
Through the night, on and off light snow showers are possible in areas like the San Francisco Peaks, Mogollon Rim, and White Mountains. Into Wednesday morning and afternoon, the moisture will slide south and east.
The White Mountains may see lingering snow showers throughout the day, again spotty and light. Snow totals are forecast to be low, with 1-2" possible in Flagstaff, 4-6+" atop the San Francisco Peaks, and up to 1" for spots like Pinetop and Heber. The tops of the White Mountains may pick up a couple of inches, too.
Wind
Gusty winds will increase as the storm system passes over the state and last through Wednesday. Gusts Tuesday are forecast to reach up to 30 mph in Northern Arizona, and increase to 30-40 mph by Wednesday.
In the Valley, winds will increase Tuesday evening through Wednesday with peak gusts between 25-35 mph. The strongest winds over the White Mountains will reach 20-30 mph over the next couple of days.
There is a Wind Advisory in place along western Arizona near Mohave and La Paz counties. The advisory is in place until 5pm Wednesday for Mohave County and until 11am Wednesday for western La Paz. Gusts may exceed 40-50 mph in the advisory zones.
Cold temperatures
While highs climb near 70 degrees on Tuesday afternoon around the Valley, the numbers trend cooler in the days to come.
The forecast high drops to 65 in Phoenix on Wednesday and 64 on Thursday and Friday. Highs in the middle 60s continue into the weekend. Overnight lows plummet in the days to come.
A Freeze Watch is in place for Pinal County and areas south/east for Wednesday and Thursday nights. In Phoenix, low temperatures fall into the low 40s beginning Thursday morning.
By the weekend, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is expected to slip into the upper 30s with some temperatures around freezing for the outskirts of the Valley like Buckeye and Queen Creek.
Following the storm system's passage, cool air will dominate the forecast through the weekend. The following week, temperatures may slowly start to climb back towards the 70s.
It appears the pattern may return to more dry conditions following this winter storm event. Overall, the 10-day forecast looks much more like a desert winter than it has!
