Brittney Griner agrees to deal with Atlanta Dream
Brittney Griner
PHOENIX - WNBA star Brittney Griner has agreed to a contract with the Atlanta Dream, according to multiple sources.
What we know:
ESPN was the first to report Griner's agreement with Atlanta.
Griner was part of the Phoenix Mercury's 2014 WNBA Championship winning team alongside Diana Taurasi.
Earlier in the day, the Mercury were working to finalize a deal with the Connecticut Sun for Alyssa Thomas.
The backstory:
Griner has spent her entire 11-year WNBA career with Phoenix since getting drafted No. 1 overall in 2013.
She missed the 2022 season when she was detained for nearly 10 months in Russia after authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis.
She was freed in a prisoner swap when the United States released notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
What we don't know:
It's not clear if this decision will influence if Taurasi will play again or retire.
