Ranger injured in shootout at Yellowstone National Park
CANYON VILLAGE, Wy. - A portion of Yellowstone National Park was closed off Thursday morning after a suspect exchanged fire with park rangers.
According to the National Park Service, rangers responded to a report of "an individual with a firearm who was making threats" in the Canyon Village area.
"When rangers contacted the individual, there was an exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement rangers," a park service spokesperson said in a statement.
The armed individual – who was not publicly identified – was killed.
A Yellowstone park ranger was injured and was being treated at a nearby regional hospital, the park service added.
FBI and NPS agents remain on the scene; an area around the Canyon Lodge complex is closed for the investigation.
No other details were immediately available.
The 3,468-square-mile Yellowstone National Park was America's first national park, and is among the most widely visited of the national park system.
