PHOENIX - Phoenix Police officials say a second person has been arrested in connection with a shooting that left a woman dead during the early morning hours of Sept. 25.
The suspect, identified by Phoenix Police as 22-year-old Ricardo Mendoza Sanchez, was taken into custody after he was released from medical care.
"He was booked into jail on multiple charges to include first degree murder," read a portion of a brief statement released by Sgt. Rob Scherer with the Phoenix Police Department.
Sanchez's arrest came weeks after another suspect in the case, identified as 23-year-old Omar Rivas, was arrested following a shooting that killed 19-year-old Mia Padilla. Like Sanchez, police said Rivas was also booked on multiple felonies, including 1st Degree Murder.
Shooting happened at South Phoenix home
According to earlier statements by Phoenix Police officials, they received a call regarding a residential burglary in the area of 7th Street and Carter Road at around 2:15 p.m. on Sept. 25.
"The caller stated he had exchanged gunfire with the suspects, who drove off during the shooting," read a portion of the statement.
Patrol officers, according to the statement, were in the area of Central and Southern Avenues when they heard multiple gunshots and saw a vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed.
"Officers attempted [to] stop the vehicle, however, the vehicle continued and eventually stopped near 2nd Avenue and Broadway Road," read a portion of the statement.
Rivas, according to police, ran from the vehicle but was later detained by officers.
Padilla and another man, subsequently identified as Sanchez, were reportedly found inside the car Rivas was driving. Both Padilla and Sanchez were taken to the hospital, where Padilla later died from her injuries.
