Where does the profit from the Arizona Lottery go?
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The lottery is big business, we all know some of the money is given back to the community from education to parks, it amounts to millions of dollars.
The Arizona Lottery is making more than $1,700 a minute in ticket sales. It's not just from Jackpot winners and retailers who get a payday when people play the lottery. Profits from the sale of scratchers and drawings are used to pay for more than a dozen community programs and into the state's general fund.
In 2015 the Arizona Lottery made nearly $750 million in sales.
So what does the lottery do with all the profits? A lot of it goes tot he winners, some of it goes to lottery retailers, and a big chunk goes to state programs. For the past three years the lottery has given $176 million to the state.
More than $100 million went into the State General Fund. $18 million went into health programs. $11 million went into mass transit programs. $10 million went to the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
