Watch: Crews get creative to rescue baby from 10-foot-deep hole

First responders in Moundridge, Kansas, were able to fish a terrified baby out of a 10-foot-deep hole using a PVC pipe, a rope and some creativity.

According to the Moundridge Police Department, officers responded July 28 to a frantic call after 14-month-old Bentley fell down a 10-to-12-foot deep pipe next to a house. He was upright and trapped inside, police said.

Video from a police officer’s body-worn camera shows police and firefighters quickly craft a makeshift catchpole – like what animal control officers use to capture stray dogs – using a long PVC pipe and a rope. They fished Bentley out about 15 minutes later.

"The creative solution was instrumental in lifting the child safely from the pipe," the Moundridge Police Department said.

In the video, officers can be seen telling the family to cover the large hole, likening it to a "booby trap" for the little boy.

"We are relieved to report that the child, while understandably shaken, was unharmed and is once again safe," the police department said on Facebook.
