Three arrested in connection to good Samaritan's death in Pima County

Three suspects were arrested in connection with the death of a Pima County man who's being called a good Samaritan.

It's reported that a suspect arrived at the home of Paul Clifford, 53, asking for help with his car on Christmas Eve around 1:20 a.m.

When Clifford didn't return home, his family called the police.

Clifford was found dead near a smoldering car on a rugged dirt road near Redington Pass and San Pedro River roads.

Deputies believe a man was murdered while trying to help someone who was having car trouble in Pima County.

On Dec. 30, homicide detectives with the Pima County Sheriff's Department developed information that led them to arrest three suspects.

"PCSD Homicide Detectives obtained a search warrant for the property and the Pima Regional SWAT Team served the warrant at the indicated location. The suspects barricaded themselves inside the residence, and eventually called 9-1-1 to negotiate a surrender. All three suspects exited the residence and were taken into custody without further incident," the sheriff's department said.

The suspects are Elmer Smith, 19, Jack Upchurch, 40, and Wendy Scott, 16. They're all facing felonies, but investigators didn't detail the specific charges.
