Tempe street racing investigation: 15 arrested, 14 vehicles seized, 2 guns recovered

The city of Tempe announced a big bust in connection to a street racing investigation.

Officials shared video from last weekend showing a driver doing "burnouts" in a crowded parking lot before crashing the car just feet from pedestrians.

Fifteen people were arrested, 14 vehicles were seized and two guns were recovered.

"On any given night, dozens to hundreds of street racers take to Valley streets at high speeds," city officials said in a news release. "Sometimes they take over intersections. Tempe Police Department is working closely with the Phoenix Police Department Street Racing Task Force and Department of Public Safety to end this dangerous activity and keep our streets safer."

Tempe Police say they issued 259 citations last year in connection to street racing.

"As the Tempe Police Chief, I am committed to addressing the issue of street racing and its associated crimes. We will take proactive measures, collaborate with local agencies, and employ innovative strategies to effectively combat this dangerous activity," Chief Kenneth McCoy said.
